The Junior Songbirds is a children’s choir, taking on singers from year 3 onwards in Earlsfield. No audition is required. In rehearsal the children will learn how to sing in parts and improve their sight singing as well as learning a breadth of material from Classical repertoire to songs from Musicals and liturgical music. The choir is now part of the ministry of St Andrew’s Church Earlsfield and the choir often sings on the first Sunday of the month at the 10.00 family service, as well as at Christmas and Easter.
There is a charge of £5.00 per session which largely goes towards paying the accompanist.
Rehearsals are Monday evenings from 6-7pm, in St Andrew’s Church, Garratt Lane, SW18, with a half term break.
The Junior Songbirds was set up by Polly May and Helen Ashby, who are both singers with much experience working with children’s choirs. They have recently been joined by Emily Jones, Head of Music at Bishop Gilpin. Polly set up the Southwest Songbirds a few years ago, which is a local ladies community choir and this is the natural extension for younger voices.
The choir is now run by Paul Mitchell who is director of music at St Andrews Church and was Director of Music at the Tiffin Girls’ School for 16 years.
