The Junior Songbirds is a children’s choir, taking on singers from Year 2 onwards, based in Earlsfield. There is a short audition, in which the candidate is required to sing a song (a nursery rhyme is fine) and do some ear tests. In rehearsals the children will learn how to sing in parts, improve their sight-singing and also how to understand the theory of music. They will perform a number of concerts each year, as well as singing in mass from time to time in local churches.
Rehearsals are Monday evenings from 6-7pm, in St Andrew’s Church, Garratt Lane, SW18, with a half term break.
The Junior Songbirds was set up by Polly May and Helen Ashby, who are both singers with much experience working with children’s choirs. They have recently been joined by Emily Jones, Head of Music at Bishop Gilpin. Polly set up the Southwest Songbirds a few years ago, which is a local ladies community choir and this is the natural extension for younger voices.
